This last one can be tough on a Contender, because, over the years, so many parts have been swapped and interchanged. Outside of that an early Contender is usually considered just a Contender.Īs with any gun, condition and original factory configuration also matters. Encore handguns are just stupid big, had one but sold it, didnt like its handling and size.Yes, the early ones do have some collectible value, but it's mostly within Contender circles. ![]() G1 and G2 is good for handgun setups, as they are more compact than an Encore. If you want a rifle, i suggest getting an Encore instead, as it provides you with every caliber up to and including 300 win mag. They sold the G1 in a pistol/rifle easy swap kit, ATF said it was illegal, Supreme Court said that it wasnt, as long as the components were not attached in an illegal arrangment (pistol barrel with rifle stock), but the exemption was ONLY for G1 contenders i think, but i dont know for sure, im not a lawyer and you should also do your own search. I remember reading where TC actually took the ATF to the supreme court over TCs G1 contender. I dont know about your state Slips73, but in Ohio, if you order the TC frame WOTHOUT any grips or stocks, it gets marked as a frame on the 4473, then you can decide whether you want a pistol or a rifle (but not interchangably). GREAT cartridge for sub 100 yards, and easy to source componets for reloading. I have an encore with a TC custom shop 300 whisper/blackout. (I currently reload for 32 different cartridges) I have two 30-30s in my battery and am always looking for something different. I'm actually looking at the 7MM Waters instead. I don't own a 30-30 carbine barrel (yet) but believe it would be near the perfect combination on the G2 action. An agent could get hurt!)īut, buying a handgun and converting it into a carbine IS legal. (Its also a lot safer kicking in the door of an honest citizen's house than going after the bangers with their submachine guns. There are lots of horror stories of their overstepping their authority concerning honest citizens. That being said, the ATFE are not known for worrying about staying inside the law. It has to have at least a 16 inch barrel and be 26 inches long overall if it has a shoulder stock. Just do not have a shoulder stock installed when it sports a handgun barrel. You can still put a carbine kit on it legally. Recoil is brutal in such a light firearm.) I'd buy a Contender G2 handgun and have it registered as a handgun. However, you can not cut down a rifle to pistol size without the $200.00 stamp. It is my understanding that you can convert a handgun into a rifle as long as the barrel is at least 16 inches long and the total length is 26 inches over all. I currently have three rifle barrels and seven pistol barrels for my Contender battery and love them all. All of them good.īoth have adjustable triggers that break very cleanly. I now have a handgun only action and a rifle only action in my kit. Six years ago, I found a used G2 carbine and bought it too. (See my report on it in the handgun shot shell thread.) I modified the 44 Magnum shot choked barrel to 410 some time ago. ![]() Very light weight and off the bench about 1 MOA with varmint weight (50 Gr.) loads. I really like it, and it shoots wonderfully.Ībout twenty years ago, a small firm named Texas Contenders offered a carbine modification to the Contender. My wife bought me a G1 TC Contender a lot of years ago.
